Tonto National Forest-Volunteers

Operation Cold Campfire

The focus of the project is preventing catastrophic wildfires caused by abandoned or unattended campfires.

The 3 stage project is supported by the following non-profit organizations:

1) The 4th grade students of the Julia Randall Elementary School.

2) The U.S. Forest Service, Payson District.

3) U.S. Forest Service volunteer organizations including Friends of the Tonto National Forest, Sustainable Rim Country LLC and Partners of the Forest.

Stage One, Message Creation: A presentation was made by Partners of the Forest and Bradley Cooper (Deputy Ranger/Payson Ranger District) to 180 fourth grade students at Julia Randall Elementary School in Payson, Arizona.  The schoolchildren were asked to create posters that illustrated to forest visitors the importance of "Putting their campfires out cold".  On May 5th, four winners were selected (see slide show) and 50 copies of each poster were printed and laminated for distribution.  The winners and school received citations from the USFS and $50 worth of gift certificates from Sustainable Rim Country, LLC.

Stage Two, Distribution: Posters will be placed at Rim Country businesses frequented by forest visitors on the Rt. 87 and Hwy. 260 corridors. Forest Service personnel and volunteers will place additional posters in dispersed camping areas where unattended/abandoned campfires are frequently found.

Stage Three, Inform & Enforce:  Forest Service and Forest Service Volunteers will patrol dispersed campgrounds on weekends beginning on Memorial Day and ending in mid-November.  The patrols will inform visitors regarding how to properly put out a campfire and seek unattended or abandoned campfires for appropriate action.

Special thanks to the three non-profit organizations involved in Operation Cold Campfire.  This project could not come to fruition without them.  They include: Friends of the Tonto National Forest, Sustainable Rim Country LLC and Partners of the Forest.
